1948 – The Year King Charles III Was Born
King Charles III was born at Buckingham Palace on 14 November 1948, the first child of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At the time his grandfather, King George VI, was on the throne, so the coins in this set carry the portrait of George VI – the coins that would have been in people’s pockets on the day the future King was born.
Charles went on to become the longest-serving heir apparent in British history, before succeeding his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on 8 September 2022. He was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023.
British Coins of 1948
The coins of 1948 belong to the pre-decimal era of pounds, shillings and pence, which lasted until decimalisation in 1971. They also come from a period of change: from 1947, British “silver” coins were struck in cupronickel instead of silver, and 1948 was one of the last years in which the King’s titles on the coins included “IND IMP” – Emperor of India – following Indian independence in 1947. You can learn more about the history of British coinage on The Royal Mint website.
A charming collector’s set commemorating the birth year of King Charles III and offering an interesting snapshot of British coinage from 1948. An appealing addition for collectors of British coins, royal memorabilia and historically themed collections – and a superb gift for anyone else born in 1948.
