300 Years of the Bank of England
The Bank of England was founded in 1694 by Royal Charter, originally to raise money for the government of King William III. Over the following three centuries it grew into one of the most important institutions in the world – issuing the nation’s banknotes, managing the government’s finances and, today, setting interest rates as the UK’s central bank. Its famous headquarters on Threadneedle Street in the City of London has earned it the affectionate nickname “The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street”.
In 1994 The Royal Mint marked the Bank’s tercentenary with this commemorative £2. With a limited edition of just 40,000 in silver proof, the Bank of England silver proof £2 coin is a fitting tribute to three centuries of British financial history. You can read more about the Bank’s long history on the Bank of England website.
Why Collect Silver Proof Coins?
Proof is the highest quality of coin produced by The Royal Mint. Proof coins are struck several times using specially polished dies, giving sharp, frosted design details set against a mirror-like background. Made in sterling silver and in limited numbers for collectors, they are far scarcer than the circulating versions and are always best kept in their original case with the certificate, just like this example.
A beautifully presented example of this important Royal Mint commemorative, combining fine sterling silver craftsmanship with a significant chapter in British financial history – and an ideal gift for anyone who works in banking or finance.
Caring for Your Coin
To keep this Bank of England silver proof £2 coin at its best, handle it by the edges only and leave it in its protective capsule. Store the case in a cool, dry place and never try to clean or polish a proof coin, as this will permanently damage its finish.
