The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games
Tokyo was chosen to host the 2020 Olympic Games, but the event was postponed for a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and finally took place in the summer of 2021 – while keeping the “Tokyo 2020” name. To celebrate the Games, the Japan Mint issued a series of 1,000 Yen silver proof coins, each featuring a different Olympic sport.
Gymnastics is one of Japan’s proudest Olympic sports, with a long tradition of success, and at Tokyo 2020 Daiki Hashimoto won gold in the men’s individual all-around on home soil. The ginkgo leaves on the reverse are a symbol of Tokyo itself, while cherry blossoms are one of Japan’s best-loved national emblems. You can read more about the Games on the official Olympics website, or about the coin’s maker on the Japan Mint website.
Exceptional Japanese Minting
The Japan Mint is renowned for the quality of its proof coins. The combination of frosted relief, mirror-like fields, colour printing and a latent image – a hidden design that changes as the coin is tilted – makes this Tokyo 2020 Gymnastics silver proof coin a fine showcase of modern minting technology. Struck from a full troy ounce (31.1g) of pure silver, it is also a substantial and impressive coin in the hand.
A stunning modern commemorative combining exceptional Japanese minting techniques with the heritage of the Olympic Games. An excellent addition to collections of Olympic memorabilia, Japanese coinage or silver proof coins – and a superb gift for any gymnast or sports fan.
