50 Years Since the End of the Second World War
The Second World War ended in Europe on 8 May 1945 – VE Day – and in the Far East on 15 August 1945, VJ Day. After almost six years of conflict, the news was greeted with huge celebrations across Britain, with crowds filling the streets of London and towns and villages up and down the country.
In 1995, Britain marked 50 years since the end of the war with commemorations, services and events honouring those who served and those who never came home. The Royal Mint marked the anniversary with this commemorative £2, symbolising the return of peace. With a limited edition of 40,000, this Second World War silver proof £2 coin is a fitting tribute to the wartime generation.
Why Collect Silver Proof Coins?
Proof is the highest quality of coin produced by The Royal Mint. Proof coins are struck several times using specially polished dies, giving sharp, frosted design details set against a mirror-like background. Made in sterling silver and in limited numbers for collectors, they are far scarcer than the circulating versions and are always best kept in their original case with the certificate. You can find out more about Royal Mint commemorative coins on The Royal Mint website.
A beautifully presented Royal Mint silver proof issue commemorating an important chapter in British and world history, combining historical significance with fine sterling silver craftsmanship – and a meaningful gift for anyone with an interest in military history or a family connection to the war.
