20 Years of The Gruffalo

Written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, The Gruffalo was first published in 1999 and quickly became one of the best-loved picture books of all time. The story of a clever little mouse who outwits a fox, an owl and a snake – and the Gruffalo himself – has been translated into dozens of languages, adapted for an award-winning animated film and read at bedtime by generations of families.

The Royal Mint released this Gruffalo 50p in 2019 to mark the book’s 20th anniversary, joining the growing series of children’s character coins that have become some of the most popular modern 50p issues among collectors.

Why Collect Silver Proof Coins?

Proof is the highest quality of coin produced by The Royal Mint. Proof coins are struck several times using specially polished dies, giving sharp, frosted design details set against a mirror-like background. Made in sterling silver and in limited numbers for collectors, silver proof versions of popular 50p designs are far scarcer than the circulating coins and are keenly sought after. You can find out more about the Royal Mint’s 50p coins on The Royal Mint website.

A charming modern commemorative coin celebrating one of Britain’s best-loved children’s characters. An appealing addition to collections of 50p coins, Royal Mint issues or The Gruffalo memorabilia – and a lovely keepsake or gift for a child, a christening or a Gruffalo fan of any age.

Caring for Your Coin

To keep this Gruffalo 50p in the best possible condition, handle it by the edges only and avoid touching the mirrored proof surfaces, as fingerprints can cause marks over time. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and never try to clean or polish a proof coin, as this will permanently damage its finish.
