25 Years of the £1 Coin

The round pound was introduced on 21 April 1983, replacing the £1 note in everyday use in England and Wales. Over the following 25 years, its reverse was redesigned many times, with emblems representing England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, versions of the Royal Arms and, from 2004, a series celebrating famous bridges from around the United Kingdom.
