What Is Maundy Money?

Maundy Money is one of Britain’s oldest royal traditions. Each year on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, the monarch presents small silver coins to a group of elderly people in recognition of their service to their church and community, with the number of recipients matching the monarch’s age. The coins come in four denominations – one, two, three and four pence – which is why Maundy sets are always made up of four coins.
