About this piece

Add a touch of Edwardian elegance to your home with this beautiful pair of George V silver candlesticks, fully hallmarked for sterling silver at Sheffield in 1912.

A Fine Pair of Antique Sterling Silver Candlesticks

Featuring a classic square stepped base with elegant tapering columns and decorative beaded borders, these impressive candlesticks are a fine example of early 20th-century British silver craftsmanship. Their timeless design makes them equally suited to traditional interiors, formal dining settings, or a growing collection of antique silver.

Standing approximately 25.7cm tall, they have real presence on a dining table, sideboard or mantelpiece, and the weighted bases give them a reassuringly solid, stable feel. Displayed as a matching pair, they make a striking centrepiece for dinner parties, Christmas tables and special occasions, and look equally good unlit as a decorative feature.

Sheffield Silver Hallmarks, 1912

These George V silver candlesticks were assayed in Sheffield in 1912, early in the reign of King George V (1910–1936). Sheffield was one of Britain’s most important centres for silversmithing, and the city’s assay office has been testing and marking silver since 1773. The maker’s mark is worn, but the Sheffield 1912 hallmarks remain visible, confirming the sterling silver standard and the date of assay. To learn more about reading British silver marks, see our guide to UK hallmarking or visit the Sheffield Assay Office.

Condition Report

The pair are presented in good antique condition, displaying overall light signs of use and wear commensurate with their age. Some of the decorative detail has softened through years of polishing and use. There are a few light dings, mainly to the bases, together with a small ding to the outer rim of one candle holder. These age-related imperfections do not detract from their attractive appearance.

Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and condition report. Extra photographs are happily supplied on request.

Why Choose George V Silver Candlesticks?

Antique George V silver candlesticks combine the quality of solid sterling silver with the refined, restrained styling of the early 20th century. Unlike modern reproductions, each pair carries over a century of history, and genuine hallmarked pieces like these tend to be valued by collectors for their age, craftsmanship and provenance. Whether you are adding to an existing collection or buying your first piece of antique silver, a matching pair of candlesticks is a classic, versatile choice.

Caring for Your Silver Candlesticks

To keep your candlesticks looking their best, dust them regularly with a soft cloth and polish occasionally with a good quality silver cloth or polish, avoiding harsh abrasives. As the bases are weighted, they should not be immersed in water or put in a dishwasher. Remove any candle wax gently once it has cooled and hardened, rather than scraping.
