About This Japanese Eiwa Kinsei Plate
The combination of vibrant colour, traditional Japanese imagery, shimmering iridescent decoration and gilt detailing gives the plate considerable visual appeal. It would make an elegant display piece for collectors of Japanese ceramics, Bijin-ga imagery, geisha artwork or Oriental decorative arts.
The woman stands with long, dark hair, holding a red flower in her hand and wearing a colourful kimono with a floral fan at her sash. Soft blue clouds drift across the gold background, while calligraphy and a red seal sit to the left. At just 11.3cm across, this Japanese Eiwa Kinsei plate packs a great deal of detail into a small space, and the plain white reverse carries a neat square red mark.
What Is Bijin-ga?
Bijin-ga means “picture of a beautiful woman”, and it is a long-established theme in Japanese art, especially in woodblock prints of the Edo period. Artists focused on elegant poses, flowing hair and richly patterned kimonos, and these same qualities can be seen on this Japanese Eiwa Kinsei plate. The subject has remained popular on ceramics and decorative pieces, bringing that classic imagery into the home.
Understanding the Marks
The word “kinsei” is often seen on Japanese ceramics and goods, and it broadly means that something has been carefully or respectfully made. It tells you that the maker is taking pride in the piece, and it is a nice detail for collectors to look for.
Displaying Your Plate
Because of its small size, a Japanese Eiwa Kinsei plate looks lovely on a small plate stand on a shelf, a dressing table or in a cabinet. It can also be grouped with other Japanese ceramics, and a position near a lamp or window will show off the shimmer of the gold ground. It would make a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves Japan or Japanese art.
Caring for Your Plate
This is a decorative plate rather than one for everyday use. Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid the dishwasher, scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can damage the gilding and the iridescent finish.
