What Is Irish Bog Wood?
Bog wood – often called bog oak – comes from ancient trees that fell into Ireland’s peat bogs and lay preserved there for thousands of years. The acidic, airless conditions of the bog turn the timber a deep, rich black and make it hard enough to carve in fine detail. When it is polished, it takes on a soft sheen that is quite unlike any other material.
In the Victorian era, carved bog wood became one of Ireland’s most distinctive crafts. Workshops produced brooches, bracelets and small ornaments decorated with Irish symbols such as shamrocks, harps, round towers and famous castles. These pieces were bought by visitors as souvenirs and treasured as a proud expression of Irish identity, and the dark colour also made them fashionable alongside the black jewellery so popular in Victorian times. Today, a good Irish bog wood brooch with a crisp carved scene is a highly collectable piece of Irish history.
Blarney Castle
Blarney Castle, near Cork, is one of Ireland’s best-known landmarks. The castle is famous above all for the Blarney Stone – kissing it is said to give the “gift of the gab” – and it has drawn visitors for centuries. With the growth of tourism in the 19th century, Blarney became a favourite subject for Victorian souvenir makers, which is why it appears on carved bog wood pieces like this one. You can find out more about the castle on the Blarney Castle website.
A wonderful example of Victorian Irish craftsmanship, with particular appeal to collectors of Irish bog wood jewellery, Victorian accessories, historical souvenirs and Blarney Castle memorabilia – and a meaningful gift for anyone with Irish roots.
Caring for Bog Wood
Bog wood is a natural material, so keep the brooch away from water and heat, and store it somewhere dry. A gentle wipe with a soft, dry cloth is all it needs to keep its sheen – avoid polishes and cleaning sprays.
