About This Silver Engine Turned Locket
The oval locket has softly scalloped edges, with a polished border framing each decorated face. One side carries a bold zigzag pattern running down the centre, while the other has a fine all-over textured design. This gives the silver engine turned locket two different looks, so you can choose which side to show. It opens on a neat side hinge to reveal the two oval compartments for photographs.
What Is Engine Turning?
Engine turning, also known as guilloché, is a decorative technique in which precise patterns are cut into metal using a specialist machine. The fine, repeating lines catch the light as the piece moves, creating a shimmer that plain silver cannot match. It has long been used on watch cases, cigarette cases and fine silverware, and it remains a sign of careful finishing.
The Sentimental Appeal of Lockets
Lockets have been treasured for centuries as a way to keep loved ones close, holding a small portrait, a photograph or a lock of hair. Because the keepsake is hidden inside, a silver engine turned locket feels personal in a way few other pieces of jewellery can. It could become a family heirloom, passed from one generation to the next with new photographs added along the way.
Adding Your Photographs
The original inserts measure approximately 2.6cm × 1.4cm, so you can use them as a template. Simply trace the shape onto your photograph, cut it out carefully and press it gently into place. This silver engine turned locket would make a lovely gift for a new mother, a grandmother, a birthday or a wedding anniversary, particularly with a favourite family photo inside.
Caring for Your Silver Locket
Clean the outside of your locket gently with a soft silver polishing cloth, following the lines of the engine-turned pattern. Keep it away from water, perfume and hand cream, as moisture can damage any photographs inside. Take it off before swimming or bathing, and store your silver engine turned locket in a dry pouch or box, away from damp, to help slow tarnishing.
