Every now and then, we come across something that makes us stop and wonder exactly what we’re looking at.

Some objects are familiar, others are wonderfully obscure, and occasionally even their original purpose isn’t immediately obvious.

In this section, we’ll take a closer look at some of the more curious pieces we’ve come across, uncovering what they are, what they were used for and a little of the history behind them.

Victorian Silver Combination Case

At first glance, it’s a beautifully made silver case — but this little Victorian accessory actually had two useful purposes.

One side was designed to hold a gold sovereign, while the other was a vesta case for carrying matches.

A suspension ring allowed it to be attached to a watch chain, waistcoat or chatelaine, keeping both essentials close at hand.

Dating from 1876, it’s a wonderful example of Victorian ingenuity — combining practicality, portability and craftsmanship in one remarkably compact piece.

And that’s the fun of objects like this: what initially looks like a small silver case can tell us quite a lot about everyday life in Victorian Britain.
