About This Lanarkshire Schools Silver Medal
A wonderful vintage collectible with strong historical and sporting interest, ideal for collectors of Scottish memorabilia, school athletics medals, vintage awards and sterling silver pieces.
The red and white shield with its flower and heart motifs sits within a blue enamel band, and a scrolled silver border and suspension loop complete the design. The date 1964 appears on a panel at the base of the band. The hallmarks show that the silver was marked in 1963, so the medal was likely made in advance for the 1964 competition.
A Matching First Place Medal
We also have a sterling silver gilt Lanarkshire school medal engraved “First”, from the same Lanarkshire Secondary Schools A.A. and made by the same maker. The two would make a lovely display together for anyone interested in Lanarkshire school sport.
A Piece of Lanarkshire School Sport
The letters A.A. most likely stand for Athletic Association. Medals like this one were proudly kept by the pupils who won them, and they offer a personal link to local history today. If you, your family or your old school have a connection to Lanarkshire, a Lanarkshire schools silver medal could be a special find, and the 1964 date may help you to look up past results in local records.
About Fattorini & Sons
Fattorini & Sons was founded by the Fattorini family, Italian immigrants who settled in Yorkshire in the early 19th century. Antonio Fattorini opened a shop in Harrogate in 1831, and the business later expanded to Bradford and Birmingham, becoming a well known maker of sports trophies, medals and regalia. This Lanarkshire schools silver medal is a good example of the firm’s presentation work.
Caring for Your Medal
Wipe your Lanarkshire schools silver medal gently with a soft silver polishing cloth, avoiding the enamel where possible. Do not use silver dips or abrasive polishes, as these can damage the enamel. Keep it in a dry place, away from damp, and store it separately from other metal items to protect the surface from scratches.
